Answer: Recording

My tenth call to Crawford was ringing in my ear when I barreled into his office. I’d confirmed Marcus, my parents, and Rickson had arrived at the resort with no problems. Still no word from Kevin. I pointed my phone at my boss like a weapon. “Why didn’t you pick up any of my calls?”

“I talked to you once.” Crawford, sitting behind the massive oak desk he loved, looked up from his computer. Never shy about raising his voice, his bellow blasted past me like a hurricane. “That was enough.”

He was a solid tank of a man who all but dwarfed the chair he sat in. Pale hair shot with gray was combed straight back. The face, like the body, was worn, but the jaw was square and solid. His craggy face and golden-brown eyes held a worry I’d rarely seen.

My worry multiplied. I’m usually fairly stoic, but an adrenaline-fueled chase and two gunshots at close range had undermined my fortitude. I knew Kevin could hold his own against a ninety-eight-pound waif. However, the gunman might somehow have caught up to them.

I slammed the door behind me. “Is Kevin hurt? Is he in trouble?”

“You’re all in trouble.” Crawford motioned to a chair at his side. “Sit. You need to see this video.”

I plopped down at Crawford’s elbow and raked my fingers through my short hair.

“Rabi’s meeting Kevin. That’s all I know.” My boss’s tone held no apology.

Fear leeched out of my bones. I closed my eyes in relief, opening them a second later. “You could have told me sooner.”

“Don’t nag.” He waved a massive paw in my direction then returned to his two-fingered hunt-and-peck method of typing. “After Kevin picks up the Caddy, he’ll call to see if you’re still here.”

“Thanks.” I barely had the energy to breathe out the word.

The old bear shot me a flat look. “Always a snappy comeback.”

I ignored his sarcasm. “What have you got?”

Crawford’s private e-mail was open on the screen. The mouse hovered over a message with no sender named and no subject.

The boss man’s expression turned grim. “Something that will put your friend away for life.”

A sword to the gut couldn’t have cut any deeper. I straightened. “What?”

“Watch.”

A tap on the mouse started the show. The video opened to a dim view of a dark room. It took me a moment to realize the cone of illumination cutting across the scene came from a flashlight.

Curiosity took hold of me. I leaned closer, studying the details. “This is the library at Rycliffe, after we went lights out so we could look for spirits.”

The view was roughly from the height of a man’s waist.

Suddenly, the picture blurred, spinning crazily. Darkness replaced the shelves of books and knick-knacks. A couple of bounces later, the picture solidified.

I twisted my head until it was parallel to the floor, the way the screen was oriented. My gut clenched. “Is this a cell phone?”

Crawford nodded. “The dead man’s phone.
